The Sitooterie
The Sitooterie was designed as a gathering space between a weekend house and its waterfront on the edge of a secluded lake. A boulder outcropping on the property quickly emerged as the ideal site — easily accessed from both the shoreline and the house, and affording a panoramic view of the lake below.
To preserve the stone faces free of mechanical connections, a system of inclined utility poles carries the framing for two deck levels while providing opposing tensile support for a canopy above. The upper deck is sheltered from light rain and direct sunlight, with an optional mosquito-netting enclosure. The lower deck opens to full sky exposure, with a dropped railing that preserves sightlines from above. Beneath the structure, ample storage accommodates kayaks, paddleboards, and off-season furniture.
