Private Sports Barn
The Hudson Valley Sports Barn was designed for a city-based owner seeking a weekend retreat for family and friends — a high-performance recreational facility accommodating tennis, basketball, volleyball, yoga, virtual golf, and a full entertainment program, while remaining in scale with the agrarian architecture of the surrounding region.
The building’s form references the century-old barns of the Hudson Valley. Shallow arches provide the interior clearance required for high tennis lobs and full-court basketball, while the roof’s curvature optimizes the seasonal performance of a 12,000-kilowatt photovoltaic array on the south slope. The exposed tongue-and-groove deck is finished in a white stain that distributes indirect light to meet U.S. Tennis Association Class I illumination standards, with a contrasting stain on the wood arches accentuating their form and grain.
The entertainment wing houses a home theater, dining and kitchen area, exercise studio, shower room, and an elevated viewing box overlooking the sport court. Cherry cabinetry and custom finishes establish a warm, high-quality interior, while serpentine valley rafters at the roof and dormer intersection add a subtle sculptural character to the second floor.

“I met with my previous architect four times and he never got this far. You talked with me once and you nailed the design.”
